SEMILLA Scholars

Our program serves 50 frosh each year who have EOP status or identify as Latinx or as underrepresented minorities (African American/Black/Caribbean, Native American). We serve students with proposed majors within the division of Physical & Biological Sciences (PBSci), and also the proposed majors of: Games and Playable Media, Environmental Studies / Biology (Combined Major), Environmental Studies / Earth Sciences (Combined Major), Cognitive Science, and Economics / Math (Combined Major).

 

The SEMILLA Scholars program is designed to support students as they transition to UC Santa Cruz and to ensure they are successful in their aspirations to obtain a STEM degree. The program connects students to holistic counseling, peer mentoring, academic enhancement activities, and STEM-focused workshops and events. SEMILLA Scholars will have the opportunity to build community with other STEM students in the program at the beginning of fall quarter and through their first year at UCSC. 


Benefits 

  • Regular access to EOP STEM Counselors who give support in course selection, major requirement navigation, and goal setting for academic, personal growth, and career achievement
  • Receive peer mentoring from a STEM student about transitioning to college and navigating the universities resources (hyperlink to resources page)
  • Receive support prepare to become outstanding applicants for internships and research opportunities in STEM
  • Opportunity to receive letters of recommendation for jobs, internships and research programs
  • Rewarded with textbook funds up to $150 and calculators for their participation each quarter

  • Attendance in academic enhancement activities  such as ACE, MSI, Small Group Tutoring (hyperlink to their websites)
  • Two EOP STEM Counselor Meetings per quarter
  • Three Peer Mentor Meeting’s per quarter
  • Attendance at SEMILLA Scholars Events led by Peer Mentors 
  • Attendance at Welcome Events & End of Quarter Events
